Laser Lock Box

The Laser Lock Box enables you to lock a laser’s frequency to a reference cavity or atomic transition.

The instrument uses high-performance modulation locking and modulation-free locking techniques. It also includes a “Tap‑to‑Lock” feature, enabling you to quickly lock to any zero-crossing on the demodulated error signal.

Below is the Laser Lock Box’s user interface showcasing some of the key features explained below:

Key Features of the Laser Lock Box:

Visualise and Configure with the Intuitive Block Diagram

The block diagram, shown above, provides a clear interactive overview of the Laser Lock Box’s setup allowing you to easily configure, monitor, and adjust every stage in the signal processing chain. The intuitive and interactive user interface allows you to:

  • Configure the setup
  • Monitor the signal throughout the signal process
  • Adjust components using interactive icons

Built-in Probe Points

The integrated Oscilloscope is accessible via probe points. You can place the probe points on the block diagram to monitor signals at various points in the Laser Lock Box’s setup. In the video above, probe point A is used, and the signal is clearly displayed on the Oscilloscope below the Block diagram.

Integrated instruments accessible via probe points:

  • Oscilloscope
  • Data Logger

Independent PID Controllers

The Laser Lock Box has two onboard PID controllers which can be altered through an interactive bode plot and the results can be seen in real-time. Fast and slow feedback applications require different bandwidth PID controllers to maintain frequency lock so, having two independent PID controllers onboard, the Laser Lock Box allows you to individually control and configure high and low bandwidth PID controllers to perfectly suit the application.

To learn more about the PID Controller instrument and bode plot visit the PID Controller instrument page.

Post-demodulation Filtering

Filter demodulated signals with up to fourth order infinite impulse response low-pass filters: Butterworth, Chebyshev, Chebyshev II, Elliptic, Cascaded, Gaussian, Bessel, Legendre.

Tap-to-Lock Feature

Quickly lock to any zero-crossing in the demodulated error signal using the “Tap-to-Lock” feature.

Applications:

  • Pound-Drever-Hall technique
  • Precision spectroscopy
  • Gravitational wave detection
  • Other closed-loop control systems
  • Custom phase-locked loop
