Liquid Crystal Devices

The effective birefringence of liquid crystals can be changed by varying an applied voltage.

Liquid Crystal Variable Retarders are solid state, real-time, continuously tunable waveplates.  Liquid crystals are birefringent materials whose effective birefringence can be changed by varying an applied voltage.

Meadowlark Optics Liquid Crystal Retarders are constructed using precision polished, optically flat fused silica windows spaced a few microns apart.

A Liquid Crystal Variable Retarder is the fundamental component used in the following devices and systems.

• Variable Attenuators and Rotators
• Variable Beamsplitters
• Spatial Light Modulators
• Non-Mechanical Shutters
• Beam Steerers
• Optical Compensators
• Polarimeters
• Tunable Filter

Description
Our standard Liquid Crystal Variable Retarders (LVR) provide a minimum retardance range of ~30 nm to at least half-wave at the specified wavelength. With specific UV devices from 350-450nm and MWIR from 3.6 to 5.7 microns
Our Liquid Crystal Polarization Rotator continuously rotates the polarization direction of a monochromatic, linearly polarized input beam. With three types of rotators based on parallel aligned nematic, twisted nematic and ferroelectric liquid crystals each providing different features in terms of contrast, speed, achromacity.
The Variable Attenuator (LVA) offers real‐time, continuous control of light intensity. Our attenuator consists of an LC Variable Retarder (with attached compensator) operating between crossed linear polarisers. With crossed polarisers, light transmission is maximized by applying the correct voltage to achieve half‐wave retardance from the LC cell.
A liquid crystal shutter is a vibration-free alternative to a mechanical shutter that is especially convenient for use with polarized light beams.  Available as high speed or high contrast shutters.
Liquid Crystal Controllers available as single channel analogue, digital two channel control with temperature sensing, with high voltage option and FLC controllers.
Compact Liquid Crystal-based Polarimeter, find the polarisation states with a ≤ 1% polarisation accuracy over a choice of broad wavelength ranges; 450 - 1100 nm, 900 - 1700 nm. Use the Eigenstate calibration set to easily recalibrate your polarimeter.
Tri-Color Liquid Crystal Optical Filter. Can be customized to achieve different center wavelengths, wavelength ranges or other specifications.

Founded in 1979 by Tom Baur a pioneer in the field, awarded the SPIE G.G.Stokes award in 2018, Meadowlark optics are polarisation experts, providing polarisation components, liquid-crystal devices, spatial light modulators and polarisation instrumentation.

In the twenty-first century, Meadowlark products help position customers worldwide to pioneer their own innovations. These include advances in liquid crystals with one-of-a-kind polarization controllers and the Liquid Crystal Stokes Polarimeter. In other areas, they measure there waveplate product line to subnanometer precision. One thousandth of a wave of retardance is our standard accuracy.
