Tunable Laser Systems

Tunable lasers enable research in the fields of spectroscopy, molecular detection and imaging.

We offer two distinct groups of tunable laser systems: External Cavity Diode Lasers (ECDLs) from 205-2450 nm and Quantum Cascade Lasers (QCLs) from 3-13 µm.

Tunable ECDLS:

External Cavity Diode Lasers (ECDLs) are tunable as their laser cavity has a wavelength-selective element (e.g. a diffraction grating), which is rotated via a pivot point. They have narrow linewidth, long coherence length and precise wavelength selection and tuning. Some models have hop-free tuning, by simultaneously varying the grating angle with the cavity length. Standard ECDL tunable laser types are Littrow and Littman/Metcalf. Their double grating allows higher selectivity and better wavelength tunability, though output powers can be lower. Tuning can be manual or motorised, where fine tuning is done via a piezo-actuator with a resolution better than 1 MHz, and course tuning via a DC motor. Our ECDL tunable lasers are manufactured by Sacher Lasertechnik.

Tunable Mid-IR QCLs:

Quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) are a type of semiconductor laser using epitaxially-grown quantum wells that contain electrons in lasing states. Our Mid-IR QCL tunable lasers are produced by Daylight Solutions, and are based on their patented External Cavity Quantum Cascade Laser (ECqcL™) technology. These systems use a Littrow configuration.

CW Mode-Hop-Free Mid-IR Laser
Narrow-linewidth operation and MHF tuning is a high bar to reach in any laser system. Unique in the industry, the CW-MHF system provides open-loop linewidths of ≤5 MHz (over 100 ms) and MHF tuning to >30 cm-1, and often to >100 cm-1. Central wavelengths are available from 4-11 µm. A unique combination of small size, tuning speeds up to >5000 cm-1/s, CW or pulsed output, high power, TEM00 beam quality, and unmatched spectral repeatability. Harmonic Generation
A resonant cavity including a frequency doubler crystal is pumped via a tunable diode laser. Depending on the required SHG power, the tunable diode laser is either a high power external cavity laser, or a two stage MOPA system. Ultra-broadly tunable mid-IR laser
The MIRcat-QT is a fully automated system with a flexible, modular design holding up to 4 pulsed or CW/pulsed modules. It offers a tuning range approaching 1000 cm-1 (>6 µm) and wavelength coverage to >13 µm. Peak tuning speeds of >30,000 cm-1/s, output power up to 1 W, and TEM00 beam quality to enable high-efficiency fibre coupling. A new, higher-precision tuning mechanism and lower-noise drive electronics provide wavelength repeatability as high as < 0.1 cm-1 and CW RIN as low as -140 dBc/Hz

Sacher Lasertechnik was a spin-out from Marburg University in Germany, with its core technology based around antireflection coatings of laser diodes and the unique advantages of building these into external cavities.

DRS Daylight Solutions are the world leaders in Quantum Cascade Laser technology, providing best-in-class mid-infrared (MIR) sources.

We’ve recently refreshed our website, and we hope that you will find the changes to be a big improvement. We’ve worked hard to make it easier to navigate the site, and to find exactly what you need from among our vast and diverse range of products.

Missing e-commerce?

One thing that we’ve not carried over from the previous site at this time is the facility to order online for a select range of our products, which you may have been used to in the past. “Off-the-shelf” items represent a small part of our product range; most often a purchase requires a more in-depth discussion between our sales team and the customer to match the right product to the user’s application. For this reason we have focussed on making it as easy as possible to request a quotation from our sales team.

Please rest assured that we will get back to you with pricing promptly, and will work with you to make sure the products you buy are exactly what you need. Once you’re ready to order, our sales team will work through the process with you, to make it as seamless as possible.
