What is a Motorised Gantry System?

A motorised gantry system is a multi-axis positioning framework that provides high stability and precision. By combining high-stiffness linear stages on parallel rails, these systems deliver automated movement across three dimensions:

  • X-Axis: Left to right.
  • Y-Axis: Front to back.
  • Z-Axis: Up and down.

This design eliminates the cantilevered load issues found in single-axis stages. Coupled lead screws provide a highly rigid structure with minimal backlash, ensuring micrometer-level accuracy while supporting payloads up to 18 kg.

Applications in Life Sciences and Industrial Automation

Our precision gantry systems are ideal for environments requiring exact positioning and repeatable motion.

  • Life Sciences & Microscopy: The gantry’s design provides unobstructed access beneath the system. This makes it easy to move optical sensors, cameras, or liquid handling devices seamlessly over microscopes, well plates, and optical breadboards.
  • Industrial Automation: In photonics and manufacturing, these systems ensure fast, low-error execution for automated optical inspection (AOI), laser positioning, micro-assembly, and precise pick-and-place tasks.

The Advantage of Integrated Controllers

Traditional multi-axis control often requires bulky racks and complex wiring. Partnering with Zaber Technologies, Laser 2000 offers systems with control and drive electronics built directly into the device. The advantages include:

  • Plug-and-Play Daisy-Chaining: Share power and data across multiple axes from a single USB connection and power supply, drastically reducing cable clutter.
  • Fast Setup Time: Configure a complete system in minutes without prior programming expertise.
  • Free Software: Gain full access to intuitive control software and a scripting editor for immediate automation.

Should you need specialised modifications—such as custom high-profile stand-offs or added rotary axes—our customisation team can usually deliver solutions within a two-week period.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are XY and XYZ gantry systems?

XY and XYZ gantry systems are multi-axis positioning frameworks that automate movement along horizontal (X and Y) and vertical (Z) planes. They provide high stability and micrometer-level precision for tasks in microscopy, photonics, and industrial automation.

What is the maximum payload capacity of your gantry systems?

Our Zaber motorised gantry systems feature a highly rigid structure with coupled lead screws that can easily support payloads up to 18 kg without compromising accuracy or speed.

Can I customise the travel range or add a Z-axis?

Yes. We offer standard travel ranges of 150, 300, and 450 mm per axis. You can easily add another Zaber linear stage for a custom Z-axis, and our team can typically complete specialised customisations within a two-week period.

Are external controllers required to run the gantry?

No. Our gantry systems feature built-in controllers. You can daisy-chain power and data directly across multiple axes using a single USB connection, eliminating the need for bulky external control racks and complex wiring.
