High power blue laser module for materials processing – fibre coupled, with high brightness and output power up to 1.5 KW

What is BPP?
Beam parameter product (BPP) is a laser specification indicating the beam “spread”. For a given output power, the brightness is maximum when the BPP is smallest.

The AI Series is unique in that it is a system that has both high power and a small BPP. Nuburu achieves this by using individual diode chips and actively aligning micro-optics to each diode to make the output from the diode circular and collimated. This technique preserves the BPP without losing power. Smaller BPP means higher brightness, and that leads to higher power density and consequently faster processing times and deeper weld penetration.

Many laser welding and materials processing systems use scanners to steer the laser beam at different angles, for processing large areas (e.g. Battery packs). Tilting the beam however can lead to uneven power density over the area of the work piece, which means uneven welds or markings. Traditionally this distortion is corrected using an F-theta lens, however these typically enlarge the spot size at the focus.

Why do we have a 400-µm spot? Because a 1.5 kW laser in a 400-µm spot delivers a power density under the industry standard threshold for introducing spatter and voids. Take an industry standard field of 100 X 100 mm at a working distance of 300 mm shows that the Beam Parameter Product needs to be better than 12 – ours is 11 mm*mrad.

Integrated with such a scanning system, the NUBURU AI Series enables the highest possible processing speed for defect-free welding.

Applications include:

  • Welding Cu–Au-Al–Ni–SS and other metals for: Lithium-ion Battery, E-mobility, Electronics Packaging, Consumer Electronics, Photovoltaics, Automotive components, and Interconnects
  • Cladding, Brazing, LMD
  • Additive Manufacturing
