Amplified & Biased Photodetectors

Laser 2000 offers a wide range of biased and amplified photodetectors, each with varying wavelength ranges.

We offer a wide range of photodiodes including amplified and biased photodiodes from our supplier Electro-Optics Technology. The ET series contains 3 detector materials (Silicon, GaAs and InGaAs) for varying wavelength capabilities. Each product also contains an amplified version in the ETA series, enabling measurement of <1 mW input powers.

EOT’s photodetectors contain PIN photodiodes that utilize the photovoltaic effect to convert optical power into an electrical current. When terminated into 50 Ω into an oscilloscope, the pulsewidth of a laser can be measured. When terminated into 50 Ω into a spectrum analyzer, the frequency response of a laser can be measured. Most of EOT’s photodetectors come with their own internal bias supply consisting of long-life lithium cells. Plugging a coaxial cable into the photodetector’s output connector and terminating it into 50 Ω at the oscilloscope or spectrum analyzer is all that is required for operation.

Below shows the different detector materials with their respective wavelength and frequencies ranges.

Biased photodetectors deliver much higher bandwidths and higher responsivities than may be achieved with bare unbiased detectors.

This is achieved as the reverse bias creates a strong electric field in the p-n junction which increases the drift velocity of the carriers, reducing their transit time. At the same time, the reverse bias also increases the width of the depletion layer, thereby reducing junction capacitance and improving the response time.

Furthermore, the increased width of the depletion layer leads to a larger photosensitive area, which makes it much easier to collect more light.

Current products include Faraday rotators and isolators for use with solid state and ultrafast lasers, VIS to Mid-IR semiconductor lasers, and fiber laser applications. We also stock a complete line of photodetectors used for time domain and frequency response measurement.

Electro-Optics Technology (EOT) also develops suitable products for industrial applications. They assure that products will remain reliable even in harsh environments. Qualification testing which includes shock, vibe, temperature, and humidity is routinely done for all components and assemblies. Additionally, systems are in place to assure traceability of product, reliability, and product specification.

We’ve recently refreshed our website, and we hope that you will find the changes to be a big improvement. We’ve worked hard to make it easier to navigate the site, and to find exactly what you need from among our vast and diverse range of products.

Missing e-commerce?

One thing that we’ve not carried over from the previous site at this time is the facility to order online for a select range of our products, which you may have been used to in the past. “Off-the-shelf” items represent a small part of our product range; most often a purchase requires a more in-depth discussion between our sales team and the customer to match the right product to the user’s application. For this reason we have focussed on making it as easy as possible to request a quotation from our sales team.

Please rest assured that we will get back to you with pricing promptly, and will work with you to make sure the products you buy are exactly what you need. Once you’re ready to order, our sales team will work through the process with you, to make it as seamless as possible.
